Adjusting the level of justice

I'm clearly not getting the full picture here.
.
A few months ago, Craig Bannister was jailed for five months having been convicted for dangerous driving having crashed a car whilst driving at more than 110 mph. He was bailed by the appeal court after serving just 20 days and now the conviction has been overturned and been replaced with one of careless driving. His jail term was replaced by a £50 fine and a three-month driving ban, which Bannister has already served.
.
At the sentencing hearing in March, the judge said he took a "particularly serious" view of the offence, which could justify only immediate imprisonment. However, the appeal court decided at a hearing in May that it was a case of "an error of judgement by an extremely experienced driver" and that a fine was the appropriate penalty.
.
Oh, did I mention that he is a serving traffic officer in South Wales Police?
